An approachable way for everyone, athlete or not, to eat better!

I have been researching different diets, trends, and meal plans for years. Michael Pollan's thoughts on food seem to resonate most with me as a whole diet (as in normal way of eating and not a temporary thing) that is sustainable and healthy. I am also a marathoner and like to see what athletes eat. Finally, Run Fast Eat Slow is a genesis of everything I believe in and hold important in one colorful and inviting place.

The recipes are great, and the writing is inviting for foodies and newbies alike. I no longer need to search Pinterest alone for great recipes. This book is a great resource for me. It is well organized and entertaining. The authors tell us the reasoning for using whole foods, including butter and oils. They avoid the time consuming calorie and macronutrient counting. They make eating healthy more approachable for everyone. I can't wait to use this book over and over.

Fabulous cookbook with great recipes & beautiful photos! One of the best parts (that I haven't seen in other cookbooks) is how each recipe has a purpose. For example "recovery snack" or "immediate energy boost" or for "speed-workout days". Well done Shalane & Elyse!

In the last couple of days I've made 4 recipes from this book and they all turned out perfectly. The recipes are simple enough for someone who is newer to cooking from scratch, but taste like a pro made them! Eager to make all of the recipes, and excited to see what these ladies come up with next.

Cultural Anthropology, provides both a comprehensive and scientific introduction to cultural anthropology.  It helps the reader understand how humans vary culturally and whythey got to be that way.   This new edition also highlights migration and immigration in the context of globalization.

About the Author

Carol R. Ember started at Antioch College as a chemistry major. She began taking social science courses because some were required, but she soon found herself intrigued. There were lots of questions without answers, and she became excited about the possibility of a research career in social science. She spent a year in graduate school at Cornell studying sociology before continuing on to Harvard, where she studied anthropology primarily with John and Beatrice Whiting. For her Ph.D. dissertation she worked among the Luo of Kenya. While there she noticed that many boys were assigned "girls' work," such as babysitting and household chores, because their mothers (who did most of the agriculture) did not have enough girls to help out. She decided to study the possible effects of task assignment on the social behavior of boys. Using systematic behavior observations, she compared girls, boys who did a great deal of girls' work, and boys who did little such work. She found that boys assigned girls' work were intermediate in many social behaviors, compared with the other boys and girls. Later, she did cross-cultural research on variation in marriage, family, descent groups, and war and peace, mainly in collaboration with Melvin Ember, whom she married in 1970. All of these cross-cultural studies tested theories on data for worldwide samples of societies. From 1970 to 1996, she taught at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has also served as president of the Society of Cross-Cultural Research and was one of the directors of the Summer Institutes in Comparative Anthropological Research, which were funded by the National Science Foundation. She is now executive director at the Human Relations Area Files, Inc., a nonprofit research agency at Yale University.

 

After graduating from Columbia College, Melvin Ember went to Yale University for his Ph.D. His mentor at Yale was George Peter Murdock, an anthropologist who was instrumental in promoting cross-cultural research and building a full-text database on the cultures of the world to facilitate cross-cultural hypothesis testing. This database came to be known as the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) because it was originally sponsored by the Institute of Human Relations at Yale. Growing in annual installments and now distributed in electronic format, the HRAF database currently covers more than 370 cultures, past and present, all over the world. He did fieldwork for his dissertation in American Samoa, where he conducted a comparison of three villages to study the effects of commercialization on political life. In addition, he did research on descent groups and how they changed with the increase of buying and selling. His cross-cultural studies focused originally on variation in marital residence and descent groups. He also conducted cross-cultural research on the relationship between economic and political development, the origin and extension of the incest taboo, the causes of polygamy, and how archaeological correlates of social customs can help draw inferences about the past. After four years of research at the National Institute of Mental Health, he taught at Antioch College and then Hunter College of the City University of New York. Heserved as president of the Society for Cross-Cultural Research and was president (since 1987) of the Human Relations Area Files, Inc., a nonprofit research agency at Yale University, until his passing

Caution for students trying to get off cheaper, otherwise good textbook

It was good for what I needed it for, an Intro Anthro class. It's an interesting read and has a nice layout. If your looking to rent or purchase the one edition older to save money, do so with caution. There were two chapters completely resturctured and changed into one in the newest edition and the final chapter is completely different in the newest edition. Besides those two minor details you can mostly get by with this textbook. There are only a few minor changes that I only noticed due to one question of my final that I knew my book was missing a paragraph on in one of the mostly unedited chapters. If your just someone interested in learning I thought this was pretty nice for a textbook. If your a student looking to get off cheaper, I suggest renting it only if your willing to take a few trips to the library to read a bit of the newer edition when this one falls short.

A great insight into the workings of culture

This was the required book for my Cultural Anthropology class more than a year ago. My professor has his doctorate in the field and had been studying anthropology all his life, so this is a subject he cares for and enjoys very much. I say this because with all of his experience in cultural anthropology he still chose this book to use for our class.

The illustrations and graphics in this textbook are fantastic and give a great sense of different cultures and how they go about life in other parts of the world. And while this class wasn't something I particularly looked forward to, I ended up enjoying this book quite a bit. The language used is at a typical college level, but also a bit personal. This makes the reading less dry and also makes it easier to learn (even if you're not thrilled about anthropology). Overall, I had a great semester using this book and found the author did a great job presenting the material in a way that transitions well and is able to hold interest.

A book is a book, at least as far as textbooks go.

I chose this rating both for the condition of the book and the style of the book. I rented the book using a gift card (and for all to know, you pretty much can't rent with a gift card unless you have another card that is valid like a credit/debit card because apparently they DO expire), and got the book promptly, which was good. However upon opening the book, the cover was flat out torn off and gone, so that wasn't too impressive. The rest of the book was intact and is just a slow read at least as far as I am concerned. On occasions the writer would throw in a lot of references to a study of sex among communities and an occasional goofy description of some event, so like I said, it is a book. Its not completely a dry read but still hard to sit down to.

“The key contribution of this book is that the authors are able to quantify the degree of trust expressed by Muslims in specific public institutions, which is then compared to how non-Muslim countrymen rate the same institutions. The findings reveal that Muslims are more socially conservative than their non-Muslim countrymen but, against the prevailing consensus, Muslims appear to be equally, if not more, supportive of the political and juridical process, as well as being equally strong supporters of equality and capitalist goals. These findings undercut much of the anecdotal evidence concerning attitudes of Muslim immigrants, demonstrating that Muslims are invested in democratic governance, the secular state, and the capitalist enterprise. Moreover, these results are all the more surprising given that alongside them, Muslims across all four nations generally report feeling discriminated against and more susceptible to crime than non-Muslim citizens.” (Contemporary Sociology)

The study guide to a great book is very confusing!!

The problem with this study guide (and the concept is good, fill in the blank, multiple choice questions, and discussion questions) is that the questions that we are told go with each chapter of The Believer's Authority book, don't. Questions for Lesson One that go along with chapter one have questions that can only be answered if you have read chapter two. (ex: "Authority is delegated _______" Answer is on page 10 in chapter two) Questions to be answered for chapter 2 are from information in Chapters 3, 5 and the last page of the book. I suppose it would be fine for self - study when you would probably be able to answer the questions from having read the entire book but I wanted to use this for a Connect Group that would meet weekly where we would do one chapter at a time. I can see everyone getting totally frustrated. So I will make up my own questions for each chapter, which defeats the whole purpose of purchasing this as a possible resource for my group.

Much more than just academic advice… It’s a valuable resource

Starting with the preface this is a well thought out and obviously worthwhile valuable book. Personally I appreciate the question format at the beginning as it allows and prompts my own thinking while providing initial insights to what can be expected deeper in the book.

The insights are as real and valid as they are pertinent while putting things into perspective.

For example, Paulo Albuquerque, PhD tell us: “The level of salary of [brand management] jobs is above US $ 100,000, and sometimes reaching close to US $ 150,000. “ He is clear not all jobs start there explaining some other areas pay “around US $ 50,000 to US $ 90,000,…” While the money is always good to know about you will learn a lot more about the opportunities in the field of marketing.

Further, Professor Raj Sethuraman writes: “Marketing includes a wide range of business and non-business activities, including stock trading, fundraising, political campaigning, and even dating!” As you can see, the breath of the field is impressive – and the insights into the field by this easy to read book is equally impressive.

So a career in marketing pays well and is quite wide reaching – is there a future for you? The following quote suggests the answer is yes!

Marketing for the Curious! OMG!! Guys – I am totally honest here but you would never get to read a peer-reviewed book like this one for this price. I wanted to work in this field and was considering this major. However, I was not sure if Marketing was for me. So, I bought this book. Every chapter was so intriguing that I finished the whole book in one go! I was very much impressed with the quality of the book. Some people might even say that you get all the information on the Internet these days. But my question is – where else would you get such original perspectives from multiple top professors in one place? Where else would you get information from the top minds of the world which you can trust? Why consider a career in this field? Why study Marketing after all? Guys – I am again totally honest here – the answers are found in the book “Marketing for the Curious”

Great Book! Great Price!

I liked this book on Marketing. This book helped me clearly understand what actually Marketing is. For just $10, this peer-reviewed/academic book is a real bargain. I was confused as to what to choose for my undergraduate major and this book opened up my eyes. I found this book also useful for graduate or PhD studies. The good thing is that - there are so many top professors writing the insightful chapters in plain English for the students like myself. I think it will save the students (and their parents) thousands of dollars because changing the major again and again will cost them lots of money. I showed this book to my parents and they were glad I bought it. Yes - I highly recommend it. It will be a major decision of your life – if you are considering a career in this field, you must know why study Marketing.
