Written in a simple style but contains a lot of depth & powerful teachings.

Don't be fooled by the simple and somewhat down to earth writing style. It contains a lot of depth if you read it with a suitably receptive mind. I had heard about the traditional practice of 'heart to mind' communication. If you pay attention you may actually get a direct experience of how this works from this book. The feeling is quite like reading a part of the text where an apparently quite simple and straightforward statement has been made, but then you realize a while later that you've understood several more levels of meaning within this apparently simple statement. Some of these cannot be easily put into language - such as the teachings on what 'patterns' really are.

Whilst you can't learn the technical parts of qigong practice from this or his other books you can get something of the essence of Ren Xue- One of the deepest and most wholesome self development systems I've encountered - and i've been looking for over 10 years.

A must read for anyone interested in learning about the best medicine on the planet

An amazing book about an amazing plant. I wish everyone knew about Iboga. It could save the world but first we must save the plant from extinction. As soon as westerners realized what this medicine can do, we of course consume way too much of it. It isn't something that you abuse but even if a lot of westerners use it once, or twice we are contributing to its extinction. The Bwiti in Gabon do not have enough for themselves now. It is a shame. I also wish the Bwiti cold harvest it sustainably and plant their own farms but since it takes so long for the alkaloids to become active 4-7 years, they need to learn patience. Iboga is the most pure, amazing medicine on the planet for sure.

Good book, though missing an important point

I just wish this book would have given some info on microdosing iboga. I and many others have found that one can use very small quantities (20-50mg on your tongue each morning) to overcome depression, anxiety, and other problems. It isn't JUST a visionary tool. In fact, for most people it is far more useful/practical at a lower dose. We need to get this legalized in the US.

Great book. Gives great insight into the traditional use of iboga

This is the most informative book I've read on iboga. I especially enjoyed reading Part Two -A conversation with Mallendi, Initiation Master and Traditional Healer-. The book also explores the experience of iboga as well as the science and politics of its use in the West. I have given copies to staff members at Crossroads Treatment Center where we use ibogaine to treat addiction so that they gain greater understanding of its traditional and ceremonial use.

Highly recommended reading.

Entertaining and honest insight into the art world

I enjoyed this book. Not really about art as much as a reflection on the experiences of being an artist over a 10 year period.
What comes across strongly is the uncertainty and problems artists face in maintaining independence without being type cast.
Most of the book is a blunt, honest and often funny description of a series of professional art residences and the people encountered.
Some great insights into what the art world is like and why it's like that.

About the Author
For more than two decades, John Harte has taught courses on the quantitative aspects of environmental science at University of California, Berkeley, where he holds the Distinguished Class of 1935 Professorship in the Energy and Resources Group. His previous book, Consider a Spherical Cow, became a landmark text in the field. He is also the author of The Green Fuse and co-author of Patient Earth and Toxics A to Z. He has published numerous articles on ecology and biodiversity, water and other resources, climate change and its effects, acid precipitation, and environmental policy. John Harte received his B.A. from Harvard University and his PhD in physics from the University of Wisconsin.

I bought this as a required text when I took John Harte's class a couple years ago. His class was engaging and interesting, and this book was incredibly helpful when trying to solve environmental problems in a quantitative way. It was challenging and thought-provoking. I recommend his class to anyone at Cal, and recommend using this book to anyone who wants to get a better grasp at solving real-world science problems.

If you are interested in getting better at solving quantitative problems, or just want a different set of fun, challenging problems to work on, buy this.

Honestly I can't imagine someone interested in STEM not liking this book. It contains well posed quantitative problems that will make you think hard, and learn a lot about problem solving and estimation.
This book is one of the two books I would recommend to anybody interested in getting better at solving quantitative problems, right besides "How to solve it".

Having played saxophone and trumpet for many years David already had a solid musical platform when he started to play the harmonica at age fourteen. By age sixteen he was already playing blues jam sessions and harmonica shows in the California bay area. By age eighteen he was studying music theory in college and started teaching harmonica at local music institutes. By age twenty he released his first book, Building Harmonica Technique, with Mel Bay Publications. While finishing his degree in music he had the opportunity to take over a local music store that helped spur the beginning of the Harmonica Masterclass Workshop. David now runs the Harmonica Masterclass Company full time, bringing lesson books, lesson videos, private instruction, and workshops to players all around the world. David has worked and played with Charlie Musselwhite, Mark Hummel, Lee Oskar, Rod Piazza, James Harman, Gary Smith, Andy Just, Mark Ford, Billy Boy Arnold, Rick Estrin, Paul deLay, Jerry Portnoy, Gary Primich, Howard Levy, Magic Dick, Tom Ball, Annie Raines, Paul Oscher, Phil Wiggins, and Brendan Power. He now fronts his own band featuring John Garcia on guitar and vocals. David is the owner of the Harmonica Masterclass Company, that specializes in harmonica products and workshops for blues harmonica. His last workshop had twenty-six states and eight countries represented in attendance. Through his numerous instructional books and videos, David is revolutionizing the way the harmonica is taught. As a professional singer and guitarist for the last 30 years, there are few his equal. Instrumental virtuosity coupled with a unique vocal style are his trademarks. To name but a few of the huge list of players John has played and recorded with: John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Eddie Taylor, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Hubert Sumlin, Sunnyland Slim, Big Mama Thorton, Skip Rose, John Mayall, Charlie Musselwhite, S.P. Leary, Luther Tucker, Lee Oskar, Bonnie Raitt, John Hammond, Bo Diddley, Mose Allision, Paul Simon, Huey Lewis and many, many more. Bo Diddley once stated John was "one hell of an entertainer." John Lee Hooker stated, "He's one of the best I've heard in a long time." John has been teaching in the California Bay Area for over 25 years. His credentials include both private instruction and group instruction for colleges, music conservatories, adult community schools and breakout sessions at Harmonica Masterclass Workshops and School of the Blues Workshops all around the world. John can be heard on various recordings including lead guitarist and frontman on Blues singer John Lee Hooker's "The Cream" on Tomato Records. Recording sessions included working with Paul Simon for the movie sound track and album "One Trick Pony" in 1979. John's latest album is with David Barrett called "Serious Fun," on which many of his original compositions are featured.

This man probably knows more about the harmonica and good instruction than anyone on the planet. His approach to improvising will greatly improve your playing. Not for a beginner, but, if you have a solid background, this will get your improvising onstage.

The book is about vampires and lesbians! How great is that? I love all of Joan's vampire stories (she has so many) and this one is great because you really get thrown into the entire lesbian vibe along with vampire romance. Its a great little book. You'll love it.

Caroline Case is an experienced art therapist and child and adolescent psychotherapist working in private practice and as a clinical supervisor near Bristol, UK. She has published widely on her therapeutic work, with her books including Imagining Animals: Art, Psychotherapy and Primitive States of Mind (Routledge, 2005).

Tessa Dalley is an experienced art therapist who works in private practice and as a clinical supervisor. She is also a child and adolescent psychotherapist working in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) team. She has published a number of books and articles on art therapy and is currently editor of the online journal ATOL: Art Therapy Online, and a reader for the Journal of Child Psychotherapy.
