Great cards, but you could save yourself some money

I love these cards. Deserves all the great reviews. However, the new edition is basically the same as the last edition as far as content goes. I think there are 2 extra cards. They are worth every penny, but if you're a student, might want to save some money and keep the 3rd edition. I have only gone through about 1/2 of the cards, so my review is based on that. If I find any other new info, I will update. The cards are now thicker, and have a glossy coating. This is good since they're more sturdy and resistant to stains. But it can make it hard if you like to write on them or highlight things you keep forgetting. Also, makes them seem more daunting since the set itself is about 1/3 thicker than the last edition, even though it has the same number of cards. Another nice addition is that it comes with a big ring and the cards are punched, so you can keep the cards together easier. The colors are also a bit different and Pathogenesis icons are now black and white ( I preferred the color icons).

Overall, these are great cards for Step or course review. Depends on your learning style. I usually switch between FA and sketchy and use these when I want to change it up or do 10/day so I won't forget things when I'm studying other subjects. I was hoping the new edition would have updated content as far as treatment, or addition of more tips. I guess changing the paper and adding a glossy finish categorizes them as "new edition". This is a great resource and I appreciate the author and publisher for this, but at the same time, I don't like when they change the cover or minor words and call it a new edition... But I understand it's business :)

Must have! Great supplemental resource for medical students!

I love these cards. Each card is filled with descriptive pictures, colors, clinical vignettes, mechanism of action, treatments, and more. They summarize everything you need to know for micro on the COMLEX and USMLE. There really isn't a downfall to these cards. Not that it matters too much, but the cards are very smooth and easier to handle. Each one is relatively wide however. But the cards serve their purpose and helps CONSOLIDATE everything you need to know about every microbe for the boards.

I purchased the Kindle version and there are so many typos / errors it make you wonder if anyone proofread this poor manuscript at all. I'm halfway into it and it is interesting I just feel that a shoddy job was done.

This second Edition has updated figures and data to compliment the presentation and discussion of the fundamentals. New to this edition are some educational tools that the author has found successful in previous books, namely the inclusion of: (1) previews of each chapter written in plain language to inform the reader why it is important to read and understand the material in the chapter, to highlight the important aspects , and to whip up the reader’s passion to consume the chapter; (2) design examples scattered throughout the book to illustrate the application of the fundamentals to the design of hypersonic vehicles and ground test facilities; and (3) roadmaps at the beginning of each chapter to guide the reader comfortably through the material. New subjects discussed in the Second Edition include shock-shock interactions, hypersonic waveriders, and aspects of hypersonic propulsion devices, always in light of the fundamentals emphasized in the main part of the book.

About the Author
Dr. John Anderson, Jr. received his Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering in 1966 from the Ohio State University. Dr. Anderson served as professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland where he became the Glenn L. Martin Distinguished Professor for Education in Aerospace Engineering. He is an Honorary Fellow of AIAA and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Among his numerous accomplishments, he was awarded the AIAA Pendray Aerospace Literature Award ""for writing textbooks in aerospace engineering which have received worldwide acclaim."" In 1999 he retired from the University of Maryland and was appointed Professor Emeritus. He is currently the Curator for Aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum.

Exciting introduction

This is my favorite Anderson text, next to Modern Compressible Flow and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Both are 5 star texts.

There are a surprising amount of typos in the text. Just be careful. I found them because I parsed the text carefully during my outlines of the chapter material. You find about 1-2 typos per chapter.

Looking at it in front of me, it's a beast. I did not formally cover the first 445 pages of Hypersonics but I did cover the last half of the book while studying High-Temperature Gas Dynamics. The high-temp sections offer a very good roadmap for learning. All of the topics are brought together very well during this portion of the text.

The information on Hypersonics appeared exhaustive. If it is recommended for hypersonics, I would get it. It covers inviscid AND viscous hypersonic flow in parts 1 and 2. Part 3 is high-temp. This is an excellent INTRODUCTORY text for graduate level students. The author does recommend many texts that will allow the reader to delve further into the subject matter.

Practical, Insightful, and Worth Each of the Six-Hundred Ninety Five Pennies that it Costs

I am not an advertising professional but in the profession of scientific research. Yet this book (which was written in the 1940s for advertising people) is just as relevant to my work as it is to anyone else who is a knowledge worker. This little book is one of the simplest summaries of commonsense---and articulating common sense is this book's greatest virtue. The book lays out a five step process for generating novel and not-so-novel ideas, articulating them, and giving them a life of their own. There are no examples, no case studies, just crisply articulated common-sense that you can put to immediate use. Everything that he says is stuff that you likely already know, so this is not one of those books that talks the lofty talk about "retraining your mind" and such obscure, undoable things. The idea in this book that most resonated with me was his comment that novel ideas are simply unusual connections among things that already exist and you might already know. The book takes about an hour to read from cover to cover (and I'm not even a fast reader).

Although Mr. Bernbach probably never intended this book for consumers like me in the scientific research profession, I'd bet my money that this little gem might be just as "duh" or "aha"-evoking to people in any other knowledge-intensive line of white-collar work. The only note of caution: This book was originally written in the 1940s and the gender bias ("the creative man," "he") is pervasive throughout its 48 pages.

If you are in a profession where your "wealth" is measured in intellectual output, this is some of the best seven dollars you can invest in your education. Highly recommended for anyone whose profession requires novelty, new ideas, and creativity. Buy---don't borrow--read, reread, and dog ear this little gem!

I have a small collection of books that I consider "private stock". These are books that I never lend and I read over and over. This book is a private stock favorite. James Young has created one of the best books I have ever read on the process of creative thinking. The technique is simple and it works. I have applied this technique to a variety of situations when I needed "outside the box" solutions and it has never failed me. "A Technique for Producing Ideas" is an extraordinary book. It is a book that will make you wonder about the power of the mind and the nature of consciousness itself.

Originally published as "The Instruction of Ptah-Hotep" and also as "The Maxims of Ptahhotep," the work is believed by some scholars to be the oldest book in the world. Authorship is attributed to Ptahhotep, a vizier under King Isesi of the Egyptian Fifth Dynasty (ca. 2414-2375 BC). It is a collection of maxims and advice in the sebayt ("teaching") genre on human relations and are provided as instruction for his son. The work survives today in papyrus copies, including the Prisse Papyrus which dates from the Middle Kingdom and is on display at the Biblioth�que Nationale in Paris. There are considerable differences between the Prisse Papyrus version and the two texts at the British Museum. The 1906 translation by Battiscombe Gunn, published as part of the "Wisdom of the East" series and which is reprinted here, was made directly from the Prisse Papyrus, in Paris, rather than from copies. Some lessons include: Learning by listening to everybody and knowing that human knowledge is never perfect are a leitmotif. Avoiding open conflict wherever possible should not be considered weakness. Justice should be pursued and in the end it will be a god's command that prevails. Greed is the base of all evil and should be guarded against, while generosity towards family and friends is praiseworthy.

A visual pleasure

I had recently read "The Developing Mind" by Dan Siegel (an excellent but slow reading book because it is crammed with interesting data). I decided I wanted a book where I could visualize what goes on in what parts of the brain. This book is it: Great pictures and comprehensive easy-to-read summaries of the functions of all parts of the brain.

Carter's Map Is A Tour de Force!

I am a retired neurobiologist who teaches a short course for adult learners entitled "An Operator's Guide To The Brain." I have used dozens of books from which to draw material, as well as my own research experiences on the cellular biology of neurons. None of these books is as valuable to me as Carter's "Mapping The Mind." The graphics are superb, and the layout of the book, where text, text boxes, the words of specialists, and graphics, are used to drive home the message, is remarkably creative. The information presented is very up-to-date, and there is so much to learn that the book lends itself to revisiting over and over. Of all my "brain" books, this is the one I would keep if only one had to be chosen. No doubt some will argue that the layout isn't as integrated and coherent as it might be, what with text boxes popping up here and there to interrupt word flow, and others might quibble about Carter's take on this or that, on the whole this is a truly remarkable book. In ten years some of it will be outdated by new findings in a fast-moving field, but the work nevertheless is truly inspired.

Interesting but some points debateable/probably wrong

This book contains alot of good information about the functions and pathways used in the brain. But I think there are a number of areas where I disagree with her conclusions and those of at least one boxed "expert" reports. The boxed expert is Steven Mithren from the University of Reading. He speculates that racism may have arisen because H. Sapiens Sapiens, with advanced "social and technical intelligence" may confuse the social (fellow man) with technical objects which provides the potential for some races to believe that other races are inferior to others because of a mixing of thoughts about humans, animals and objects. He believes our social/technical knowlegde provides a potential to treat others as objects. "There is no compulsion to do this, simply the potential for it to happen." When it comes to human thought, there is the potential for anything to happen. He points out that this has happened throughout human history. The tendency to see others as objects already has a diagnosis and its not "Cognitive Fluidity." Its Antisocial personality disorder. Its something hard to prove either way but it seems like a speculation that few good scientists would engage in.

When the author discusses "theory of mind" she believes it is an innate human ability to know what is in another person's mind. That is not literally true. Theory of mind is when we begin to realize that people have different thoughts and attitudes than we do. It also, depending on the definer, may include the ability to infer what other people are thinking because of what they say and how they act. We never know what is in another person's mind even if they tell us directly. As people mature they begin to realize that behavior is generally a better indicator of a person's state of mind than what they say but for some, this comes fairly slowly.

She also thinks the case of Phineas Gage gives the example of a brain module gone bad. Phineas Gage had a massive amount of brain tissue damage, primarily in the inhibitory prefrontal lobes but it was not limited to that area, or even a "module." Gage underwent a significant personality tranformation and had a very hard time with any long-term goals or goal directed behavior. Buy he had not developed a "complete inability to direct or control himself." His prefrontal lobes were gone which lessens our ability to inhibit inappropriate behavior but I don't think the result was an "Id gone wild." He didn't go on a massive crime wave nor was he a serial rapist. He had some control, but he had lost much. Gage is seen as a victim of a sluggish (or non-existent) brain module. This then raises the question should the Gage's of today, relapsing drug addicts and alcoholics be unworthy of sympathy and does putting repeat criminals in jail really the thing to do to those whose module is merely sluggish? First drug addicts and alcoholics in recovery don't want sympathy. They appreciate empathy but sympathy puts them in a "one down" position. Should recidivist criminals be put in jail? As of now, we don't have good alternatives. Would the author like a repeat rapist moving in next door or a child molester helping her children cross the street because he got a job as a crossing guard. I think unlikely. Regardless of a "bad childhood" or "bad modules" we are responsible for our behavior and sometimes that behavior warrants punishment and removal from society

Too often she does what she says are the thing that scientists engaged in brain mapping loathe. She seems to often ignore the qualifying phrases that scientists use when they are uncertain, like "could be involved in" "might play a part in" or "offers a plausible mechanism." A good scientist would realize how such minimizing phrases make what may appear to the uninformed as fact, are actually an admission of "we really don't know."

She also proposes that when the mind is mapped completely, we will know everything there is to know about the mind. She states when the map is known, "we will be able to target psychoactive treatment so finely that an individual's state of mind (and thus behavior) will be entirely malleable." Sweeping assumptions like that are why neuroscientists don't like journalists at their conferences, though Ms. Carter rationalizes a different reason. "It may even be possible to alter individual perception to the extent that we could...live in a state of virtual reality, almost entirely unaffected by the external environment." She then says since we seek mind altering drugs and sensatition seeking this would be the culmination of an "old ambition." We have people who live unaffected (we think) by external reality--catatonics. A virtual life unimpeded by the messiness of reality may seem to some desirable but I'll pass.

There are other if not mistakes, further examples of what a journalist can do with superficial understanding of the subject. I'm surprised her physician consultant didn't question some of her claims and inferences. There are more exampes of unwarranted conclusions, biased language and frank errors but read it for yourself. I could be wrong.

If you're not hung up on literal accuracy and don't mind excessive speculation, this book is still pretty good and I would recommend it, if you can put up with some of her conclusions that are really just potentials and possibilites which she at times confuses with facts
