Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 – 1864) was one of America’s most famous writers. Best known for the classic book The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne also wrote many other well known books and short stories including The House of the Seven Gables and Young Goodman Brown.
Hawthorne’s writing centers around moral issues and the psychology of humans and is dark in nature. Much of this is due to Hawthorne’s shame of being related to one of the Salem Witch Trial judges. John Hathorne was Nathaniel’s great grandfather and the latter added the “w” to his name in order to hide that relation.

Born in 1804, Nathaniel Hawthorne is known for his historical tales and novels about American colonial society. After publishing The Scarlet Letter in 1850, its status as an instant bestseller allowed him to earn a living as a novelist. Full of dark romanticism, psychological complexity, symbolism, and cautionary tales, his work is still popular today. He has earned a place in history as one of the most distinguished American writers of the nineteenth century.

Hawthorne's little masterpiece

My father used to read aloud Dickens' A Christmas Carol to the family at Christmastime, so I am perhaps better prepared to enjoy this gem than the previous reviewer. Make no mistake, My Kinsman, Major Molineux is not a feel-good story like A Christmas Carol. Rather, it is a very detailed account of a degradation ceremony in America in the days prior to the Revolutionary War. Degradation ceremonies are not as popular as in olden times, but were powerful examples of extra-legal social action. While reading this story to oneself is enlightening, it has nowhere near the power of hearing the words out loud exploding in your brain. The colors of night, the descriptions of the horses, torches, streets, and buildings, and the amazing way Hawthorne captures the actors' emotions is best enjoyed in the audio format. Highly recommended!

Hawthorne realized well over one hundred years ago the possibilities and the pitfalls of urban living, of the co-mingling of the masses, and its possible impact on the 'individual.'
My Kinsman, Major Molineux, is a quick read that will stay with you. The unanswered question - 'what did Major Molineux actually do to deserve his fate' - injects a timeless dimension to this work.

Story=4 Stars, Edition=1

"My Kinsman, Major Molineux" is one of Nathaniel Hawthorne's excellent short stories. Unlike most of his works, it is not allegorical but a highly intriguing combination of historical realism and the kind of hair-raising suspense that would not be common for well over a century. In this last, like most of Hawthorne's canon, it was extremely influential; the story works up suspense in a way any mystery writer would appreciate, delaying the climax so long it is near-painful. It is a tribute to Hawthorne's artistry that the revelation is not anti-climactic but an ironic masterstroke well worth the wait. The story can easily be enjoyed on this very simple level. However, as always with Hawthorne, there is more. Unlike his more famous works set in Puritan New England, this is set in America not long before the revolution. As such it is a vivid picture of that dark era showing the many tensions and conflicts then rampant. Anyone interested in Hawthorne will want this, but the fact that it is widely anthologized makes a standalone very hard to justify; the important thing at any rate is to read it in some form.
