The fifth edition includes a wealth of new and revised chapters that reflect developments in the field in the years since the fourth edition was published. The sections on anatomy of the periodontium and the basic sciences underlying tooth and implant attachment have been expanded, as has the section on pathology and pathogenesis of periodontitis. Increased interest in the interdisciplinary aspects of periodontology is reflected by new chapters on orthodontic anchorage. Other important topics with increased prominence include: risk assessment and host-modulation therapies, regenerative therapies, and a full discussion of surgical and non-surgical therapies.

Very good and thorough book on periodontology

Very good and thorough book on periodontology. I like that the book refers to a lot of studies instead of making it's own conclusions on subjects that has not yet been proved. The negative side is that the book is very heavy to read. Sometimes you just want to be presented the facts. Chapters dealing with treatment planning and treatment of periodontitis is based too much on examples and too little on actual guidelines. But all in all a good book.

It has many examples and pictures, which make it attractive -- a feature, I suppose, that is necessary to hold an undergrad's attention in these times we live in.

But what annoys me is the absence of conceptual rigor/detail and the sudden jumps in explanation. I want my students to be able to see what is going on and appreciate the simple elegant logic of microeconomic theory. Instead the book reads like it's delivering information to you, but isn't really explaining why it makes sense.

Here's an example. In Section 4.2 on Income and Substitution Effects, the effect of a price change is decomposed into income and substitution effects using constant utility. But as many of us know, there's an alternative way to do this too, which is holding purchasing power constant. For some reason that approach isn't mentioned. Instead, the text reads as though we were interested in the constant purchasing power approach, but then suddenly switches to a constant utility approach by saying "This substitution is marked by a movement along an indifference curve." But why? Wouldn't any intelligent student at this point start wondering how we went from purchasing power to utility? Flip back to Section 4.1 and find that the word utility has been quietly introduced there in a sentence that's in parentheses: "(Because the price of food has risen, the consumer's purchasing power -- and thus attainable utility -- has fallen.)"

Pooh. I don't like books that sneak important ideas into parentheses in order to avoid answering the all important question -- i.e. "Why?"

Not the same as the International Version

I want to warn anyone buying the international version that the problems are different from the US version.
Also, some of the notation is different (ex. rupees instead of dollars) and some of the examples are different.
If you don't have problems assigned from the book, the international version will work fine.
Many sellers claim that the editions are exactly the same, but they are not!

Adequate discussion of microeconomics, but lacking the mathematics to back it up

Although this book has plenty of examples and descriptions suitable for any undergraduate level microeconomics course, I personally struggled with the lack of math in the book. For the most part, the book lacks any mention of calculus at all, which is essential when discussing something like elasticity or optimization. When it does appear, subjects like partial derivatives or Laplace transforms are relegated to a short addendum at the end of the chapter, glossed over in a fashion that would make it difficult for anyone but math majors to understand what the author is talking about.

the truth, without any moralistic prejudicial twisting

No criticisms, only praise for this book ! If world drug policy were as rational as this book, society, culture,and life in general would be better for all. But, sadly , there are so many misguided governmental and social policies in place, along with the abysmal ignorance of the average person, that there's going to be a long uphill progression toward balanced humanistic thinking about all things related to drugs. If you haven't read the book, no matter how well informed you think you are, you're still ignorant. I was shocked when I realized how little I actually knew before the reading of Drugs-without the hot air.

Dr. Nutt starts the book by explaining why our current approach isn't rational. He brilliantly argues how alcohol is more dangerous than many "hard drugs" and how ecstasy is less risky than horseback riding.

Those examples helped me gain a new perspective outside of the hysteria and propaganda I'd been given all of my life. After that, I could understand his fact-based analysis of drugs and addiction with the goal of safety, rather than outright prohibition.

The only flaw is that it is very scientific and detailed. I loved that aspect because it helped me let go of the emotions tied to drugs, but some may find it boring.

Overall, if you're ready to learn what drugs are, and what they aren't, I'd highly recommend Dr. Nutt's book!

Sanity and the facts - at last

David Nutt answered all my questions about drugs - how they work, why people take them and what we can do about it. If you want the truth, the facts and clear, sane responses to drug policy, this book is for you. The only question that will remain after reading it is "why is our policy on drugs so wrong-headed?".

Actually not very useful; a disappointment.

I've been looking for a general self-sufficiency skills handbook to help me with the myriad tasks farm life requires, an aid to improvised problem solving in a very remote area where many of the old skills are dead or dying or unaffordable. Positive Amazon reviews pointed me to this revised classic. What I discovered is a far-ranging, beautifully-illustrated, weighty tome that somehow manages to answer very few do-it-yourself question with enough depth to be useful. The author lives in Ireland, and in some cases the materials available to him are almost impossible to find in America: osiers? Slashing hooks? Peat knives? So, here in the American west many of the suggested solutions are simply out of reach. And I was immediately suspicious of the less familiar chapters when I saw that the sections on animal husbandry cover just a few pages. This topic is perhaps the most demanding that a farmer can face, and many beginner's guides are hundreds of pages long. This book leaves the reader with the misapprehension that keeping a hog is like keeping a stuffed bear. I think the subtitle should read: "a Classic Guide for Dreamers", so as not to mislead the realists into thinking that this book actually proposes any farming solutions. The one thing it does perfectly is underline the fact that a small farm is an intensive, demanding, all-encompassing undertaking for which no amount of pretty pictures will ever suffice. I love the idea, and I enjoy flipping through the book, but don't be fooled into thinking that there is much practicality to match the folksy wisdom in this book.

I've owned several editions of this book...and it has molded my relatively self sufficient life over 3 decades...for all of you wishing to escape from the 9 to 5, materialistic world...you can't go wrong with this book in your hands.

I also recommend "Living the Good Life: How to Live Sanely & Simply in a Troubled World", by Helen and Scott Nearing.
