We are accustomed to think of goods and evils as functions of a natural life, sparks struck out in the chance shock of men with things or with one another. For Dante, it was a matter of course that moral distinctions might be discerned, not merely as they arise incidentally in human experience, but also, and more genuinely, as they are displayed in the order of creation. The Creator himself was a poet producing allegories. The material world was a parable which he had built out in space, and ordered to be enacted. History was a great charade. The symbols of earthly poets are words or images; the symbols of the divine poet were natural things and the fortunes of men. They had been devised for a purpose; and this purpose, as the Koran, too, declares, had been precisely to show forth the great difference there is in God's sight between good and evil. InPlatonic cosmology, the concentric spheres were bodies formed and animated by intelligences of various orders. The nobler an intelligence, the more swift and outward, or higher, was the sphere it moved; whence the identification of "higher" with better, which survives, absurdly,to this day. And while Dante could not attribute literal truth to his fancies about hell, purgatory, and heaven, he believed that an actual heaven, purgatory, and hell had been fashioned by God on purpose to receive souls of varying deserts and complexion; so that while the poet's imagination, unless it reechoed divine revelation, was only human and not prophetic, yet it was a genuine and plausible imagination, moving on the lines of nat...

Monograph, rather than book

It would be better if Amazon or someone could identify publications like this as monographs rather than books.
This is an article written by Santayana. It advances the position that the three poets summarize three major themes in western thinking. I enjoyed Santayana's turn of phrase, and turned back to Lucretius. I may re read Dante (maybe) and Goethe (doubtful)

Here is Santayana's own (shall we call it?) non-apology for this short but substantial book:

... I am no specialist in the study of Lucretius; I am not a Dante scholar nor a Goethe scholar. I can report no facts and propose no hypotheses about these men which are not at hand in their familiar works, or in well-known commentaries upon them. My excuse for writing about them, notwithstanding, is merely the human excuse which every new poet has for writing about the spring. They have attracted me; they have moved me to reflection; they have revealed to me certain aspects of nature and of philosophy which I am prompted by mere sincerity to express, if anybody seems interested or willing to listen.

This is a great book with a paradox at the heart of it. On the one hand, Santayana was probably the only man in America, the only man at Harvard even, who had the urbanity and breadth of knowledge to write about Lucretius, Dante, and Goethe (with footnotes in Latin, Italian, and German). On the other hand, who but an American could view the great national poets of Rome, Italy, and Germany as his own inheritance? And with such panache:

... Because my instinct taboos something, the whole universe, with insane intensity, shall taboo it for ever. This infatuation was inherited by Dante, and it was not uncongenial to his bitter and intemperate spleen. Nevertheless, he saw beyond it at times. Like many other Christian seers, he betrays here and there an esoteric view of rewards and punishments, which makes them simply symbols for the intrinsic quality of good and evil ways. The punishment, he then seems to say, is nothing added; it is what the passion itself pursues; it is a fulfilment, horrifying the soul that desired it.

On the one hand, I don't think this book is a substitute or shortcut to three major poets. On the other, I don't think a reader should feel daunted by the scope of this book- one needs no mastery of ALL of Lucretius, Dante, and Goethe (given that, one could write such a book instead of read it)- that's why I call THREE PHILOSOPHICAL POETS a gateway.

A Real Conservative's View

John P. Resiman knows the difference between a liberal and a conservative. And, in this explosive book, he turns the tables on those who hold the most "conservative views" on the science of global climate change.
They are not conservatives, in his view. Worse, he says, they are really liberals. Reisman knows the science and arrives at the inescapable conclusion that human's and our fossil fuels consumption are the drivers of global warming. But, science books explaining the cause and effect relationship are abundant. It isn't the science Reisman wishes his readers to understand, so much as the impacts. Reisman's conservative bona fides are unassailable. So, he speaks directly to conservatives in language conservatives understand, the Lingua Franca of the economy. Reisman knows the science is clear. He draws a direct line between the known science and our wallets. While others have attempted to connect the dots, Reisman is the first to do it so convincingly. Forget rising sea levels, he tells us. Stop worrying about that for now. What we should be worried about is the continuation of our way of life. The interruption of the hydrologic cycles, the desertification of our productive croplands, our ability to support ourselves in a changing climate are his concerns. If we don't make changes, Reisman says, capitalism is skating on thin ice. How certain is he that the science is correct? Toward the end of the book he offers a wager of $100,000.00 to any reader who can prove the assertions wrong. It is the only thing in the book that might be considered outside the bounds of conservatism.
Resiman is valuable as an author. He may be more valuable to the future as a political leader. He has my vote.

An Important Work

If you're skeptical about climate science and big government but only have time to read one book on climate change, this is the one for you. It will make you see the economy in a whole new light.

It's an ambitious and intentionally provocative work that addresses everything from the nature of science itself to the psychology of denial to the economic consequences of doing nothing (which are many times the cost of addressing it now). It channels everyone from Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn to Carl Sagan, William Safire and Mr. Wizard.

You'll find this book especially helpful if you're confused by all the talk of natural cycles and other potential contributors to climate change, or if you don't like what you've been hearing about the IPCC. Reisman -- a true conservative in the Eisenhower tradition -- addresses these issues in part by addressing the pseudo-science that has been flooding the internet.

The book is broken into chapters covering science, economy, energy, environment, security, psychology, fraud, and policy -- but these issues often bleed into each other, in apart because of the systemic approach the author takes to them.

He focuses his economic analysis on global agricultural production and the consequences for the economy and national security if we start to hit agricultural and economic tipping points.

"Not unlike the Romans, we feel insulated and safe from resource scarcity because our direct experience is that the food and water is flowing, so what is there to worry about?"

The answer, unfortunately, is: plenty. Because once the agriculture sector goes haywire, everything that's built upon it will follow suit.

And everything is, in fact, built on it.

The text in these stunning volumes is taken from the 1867 Chapman and Hall edition, which became known as the Charles Dickens edition and was the last edition to be corrected by the author himself. The Nonesuch edition contains full-color illustrations selected by Dickens himself, by artists including Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), George Cruikshank, John Leech, Robert Seymour, and George Cattermole.

The Nonesuch Dickens reproduces the original elegance of these beautiful editions. Books are printed on natural cream-shade high quality stock, quarter bound in bonded leather with cloth sides, include a ribbon marker, and feature special printed endpapers. Very moving stories and a great publishing house

Dickens' Christmas Books might be some of his most overlooked works, except for, of course, "A Christmas Carol." But in these stories he has captured the season's spirits of reflection and faith better than any other work I've read. "A Christmas Carol" is an acknowledged masterpiece; "The Chimes" and "The Battle of Life" are particularly moving as well. Four of these five stories bring me to tears by their ends.
I started in 1991 to read one story per year in the published sequence, (for Christmas 2000, I'm reading The Haunted Man again) and this has made December and its holidays more enjoyable and meaningful for me. I hope to continue the cycle and look forward to reading "this year's Christmas story" aloud to my family as my kids grow up.
Oxford Press/World's Classics publishes excellent quality paperbacks, and they do justice here to Dickens' powerful works. I highly recommend this work (and especially this publisher) to anyone; if you're looking for "A Christmas Carol", get this volume of all the Christmas Stories and enjoy even more of Dickens' masterful ability to weave the human condition into such moving short stories.

Review of the Nonesuch Dickens edition

My review here is not of the novel, but rather of the Nonesuch edition of Dickens' classic. The book itself is a facsimile edition of the 1937 Nonesuch Dickens, and is published by Barnes and Noble. The book itself is in quality hardback. "The Christmas Books" Nonesuch edition has the spine bound in leather and the rest of the cover is cloth-bound [the color is red].The dust jacket is clear quality plastic. The paper quality is of good stock and is cream in color.

The text is set in Martin's Type and the etchings were printed and hand-colored by A. Alexander and Sons Ltd. This is a beautiful and affordable classic [I own six of them and plan to get the rest] and the Nonesuch Dickens Classics will enhance any collector's library.

Full of joy and goodness

The first thing to point out with this collection is that it is well worth getting just for the first tale (the Christmas Carol). Christmas Carol, by far and away, more than matches the hype and is (dare I say it) genius! No other story (that I know of) imbues the spirit of christmas more perfectly and faithfully and this book is worth purchasing just for that.

However, tales two and three ('Chimes' and 'Cricket on the Hearth') are not quite so good and do let the collection down. 'Chimes' is a good story in essence: it is about a charactor called Trotty who becomes cynical about human nature and is taught a redemptive lesson by the spirits that live in the bells of the local church.
The really erksome thing is that the story never really seems to go anywhere and goes around the houses trying to do so. What should be a clear-cut and heartwarming tale, ends up not really imparting the lesson that it should; that man is built for better things.

'Cricket on the Hearth' is a little better and clearer in what it is aiming for and in its writing although I did read through ten pages of it where not a lot happened. Essentially it is about a carrier (Peerybingle) and his wife Dot who are watched over by a Guardian Angel in the form of a cricket. In a similar way to Christmas carol, this tale covers a redemption plot of the local toymaker (Tackleton) but also includes several other elements that make it an enjoyable Christmas tale.

So, to conclude, the first story in this book should be read by everyone, the second can be skipped and the third is worth reading, if only at Christmas time. As a collection, this book excludes the rather poorer tales of 'Battle of Life' and 'Haunted man', which is a redeeming virtue - if it excluded 'Chimes' as well, then it would be a true masterpiece.

Language driving me mad and only on Ch3...

Stuck on chapter 3 as its already annoying me with really strange language choices - like the niece of the main character is in 'fifth year of senior infants' - what's that? Is it fifth class? Call it fifth class then. The main character calls her brother in law a 'good police officer' - is this set in Ireland or not? If it is, he's a guard or a Garda. The main character goes home to Cork but somehow manages to look out at the Irish Sea in her home town. The Irish Sea is between Ireland and Britain- she must have been in a rocket to see that from the Cork coastline. Don't know if I can continue with 6+ hours of this kind of stuff annoying me when there are so many great books out there...

More romance than suspense

Not sure why this was advertised as a "gripping, psychological drama". It was basically a romance novel with some family conflicts. The author tries to create suspense by having virtually everyone say "I have a secret" but it doesn't come off as suspenseful. The ending is fairly obvious early on, and I kept wishing the author would just get it over with already

About the Author

Jason W. Osborne is Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.  He is also Professor of Applied Statistics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, with a secondary appointment in Public Health Science.  He teaches and publishes on "best practices" in quantitative and applied research methods. He has served as evaluator or consultant on projects in public education (K-12), instructional technology, higher education, nursing and health care, medicine and medical training, epidemiology, business and marketing, and jury selection in death penalty cases. He served as founding editor of Frontiers in Quantitative Psychology and Measurement and has been on the editorial boards of several other journals (such as Practical Assessment, Research, and Evaluation). Jason also publishes on identification with academics (how a student's self-concept impacts motivation to succeed in academics) and on issues related to social justice and diversity (such as Stereotype Threat). Comprehensive and logical

Best Practices in Data Cleaning by Jason Osborne provides a comprehensive guide to data cleaning. Although I have had a great deal of training associated with the process of setting up and reviewing data collection and analysis I had been away from the field for several years, and recent work required that I consult prior to beginning a new project. This book made the process of getting back up to speed enjoyable. I was very pleased by the step-by-step explanations provided, and found the book to be an excellent resource.

Well, it cost me $4 in postage to discover that "Best practices in data cleaning" is not about data cleaning, but mostly about the challenges of working with survey data. The author acknowledges upfront that his "data cleaning" includes activities undertaken both before and after data collection, and his first topic, power and sample size analysis, drives the point home. Among the other topics, outlier detection alone is what I would call data cleaning; handling of missing data and normalizing transformations - maybe.

Despite the middling rating, I like the book. Given the abundant evidence of lacking statistical expertise among social-sciences researchers - take the references cited here, or in "Understanding the new statistics" by Geoff Cumming - any educational effort is welcome, especially when delivered with an accessible, friendly writing style.

The misgivings come from the titular misnomer - SAGE, I want my $4 back - and, secondly, dissatisfaction with the statistics on display. I am not talking about the introductory nature of discussion - meaning that you will need to consult other references to understand how a particular method, and how it can be implemented - but about the suspicion that presented repertoire is a bit behind the curve. Consider "Data analysis using regression and multilevel/hierarchical models" by Gelman and Hill, for example - it's hard to believe that "Best practices in data cleaning" is more recent. R, simulation-based methods, "robust" or non-parametric methods, "exact" tests - absent or mentioned in a few words. ("Winsorizing", an antique "robust" method, is there, misspelled, and there is a simulation done in SPSS - filling four pages (!) with random numbers. It all feels very 1990s).

Overall, I appreciate "Best practices in data cleaning" as an accessible "awareness-builder" offering practical advice and many useful references - while flagging some reservations about said advice, or rather about what is left unsaid. Applied researchers in psychometrics should take a look. Page visitors looking for a book about data cleaning - check out "Data quality assessment" by Arkady Maydanchik.

PS. Normalizing transformations are given a lot of space in the book, and I wonder if the discussion is entirely accurate. On page 90, for example, the author seems to suggest that normality of data is a requirement of conventional statistical tests. I'd say that things are more nuanced - the central-limit theorem gets one asymptotic normality, but one deals with finite, and often small, samples - and note that since one is not always going to work in univariate setting (e.g, drawing histograms instead of running regressions), it's helpful to point out the difference between conditional and unconditional normality.
