The pictures made me want to go to Oxford. The maps and pictures together helped me imagine being there. This book helped me "see" what I had only read of in biographies before. I want to go to Oxford, now even more so, but till I can I have a valuable resource to pull from the shelf anytime I want to see again what I'm reading about in some latest Lewis (or Inkling) biography.

great learning tool

I am a first year law student and I would recommend this book to anyone that is studying law as a matter of fact I have the law express series both the revision and Q+A for contract law, English legal system, public law (constitutional and administrative law) and criminal law . these books are a great aid to my studies. They make it so much easier to understand the course. The question and answers are superb with the diagram at the beginning of each question totally makes sense in helping to plan the essay.

An easily overlooked GEM!

In researching material for a book project that pertains to the ancient antediluvian world, it was inevitable that the "Atlantean" mythos would find its way onto my reading list. I had recently finished reading "Gateway to Atlantis" by Andrew Collins (published in 2000) and found that one his references was "The Shadow of Atlantis" by Alexander Braghine; for whatever reason I was intrigued enough to order the book.
I was not sure what to expect from a book that was originally published in 1940 (this edition published 1997) and expected its content to be somewhat dated. I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of information and insight to this lost chapter of our past. The etymology alone of particular words & names is priceless, as well as the depth of research and the "pre-PC" forthrightness which is somewhat refreshing. The lost continent of Atlantis and Atlantean theories in general was not on my radar, although the concept is intriguing and one should keep an open mind. I'm quickly becoming a convert and am finding that there is so much more to mankinds past than we've been led to believe by mainstream historians and academics. If you are a student of Atlantean theory then you will appreciate this book, one that otherwise might be overlooked for much more recent fare. For holding up and being relevant for over 70 years, I'm compelled to give this book 5 stars.

A down-to-earth pladoyer for the myth of Atlantis

This book was a fun to read, though I am quite suspicious towards people who seemingly try to convince the reader of the very existence of Atlantis. And here is the thing: the author does not. Instead I was surprised how calm the authors is in trying to prove the case for the sunken continent thereby astonishingly using facts, that were reestablished only after the radio-carbon dating method was invented after the war. (don`t forget this book was written in the 30s). Though no piece of evidence has ever been found, no dagger, no tablet, no piece of paper..., but the author does a terrific job for his time to dwell on old legends of this planet`s people who tell of visitors from other continents, from islands vanished and so on, thereby accidently proving something that has long been thought impossible: the very crossing of the Atlantic ocean by Europeans as well as Africans. In summery the authors leaves the existence of Atlantis to the imagination of the reader, but instead does a terrific job at pointing at the paths, that lead to the myth.

He also covers other important topics such as how to evaluate junior exploration companies and their press releases. Stevens links science with insightful comments - a very useful book.

While the reader won't whip through this book like a Clive Cussler adventure novel, it is not a dry university textbook either. The book is lavishly illustrated with interesting coloured drawings, maps, 3D block diagrams and photographs that make it easy for readers to visualize geological and engineering concepts.

Thorough Overview of Exploration and Mining for Non Geologists and Non-Engineers

I am a Mining Analyst and Financial Modeller. The strengths of this book for me are:
(1) Strength in breadth with sufficient depth to whet the appetite to look elsewhere for greater depth
(2) Clear explanation of the key geological deposit types in everyday language. This is important because highly technical language and overly nuanced interpretation is a feature of many geology texts which makes them far less readable for non-geologists.
(3) The summaries of size and grade ranges of typical deposits is really useful and something I would have loved to have had starting out.
(4) Straightforward explanations of Mining and Metallurgical processes.
(5) Very good diagrams and photographs to illustrate key points with the diagrams and photos in colour close to the text to which they relate - good for visual learners.
(6) A good summary of the right questions to ask as an investor.
(7) Well edited with very few errors (although there is a bit of repetition).

The areas where greater explanation would be useful include:
(1) The text is very North American (even specifically Canadian) in emphasis and examples. Some greater discussion of other geological provinces and their similarities and differences would have been interesting (ie the Greenstone belts of W. Australia, West Africa and Guyana). In particular Africa and most of Oceania (Indonesia, PNG, Phillipines, Aus, NZ) get little or no mention. As an Australia I would say that, of course but it's a global business.
(2) A chapter on financial analysis of mining projects would probably be useful to most investors - perhaps not the standard DCF spiel but more if it picked out some of the key project differentiating aspects and gave examples of the magnitude of their impact (pit slope / ore to waste / recovery etc)

All in all it's clear the author was trying very hard to make the book accessible to non technical people and he's done a really good job of that. If a second edition incorporates the two items on my wish list the book will get my 5 stars.

Mining explained in a simplified way

This is a great book if one wants to know the cycle of mineral and mining from the formation of minerals to mining and all the process in between. Definitely I would recommend the book to anyone who works in the mining industry and is not a geologist, or anyone who is interested in mining and geology. It is one of the few mining/geology books I have come across that are able to make the subject entertaining and interesting to read. I work in a mine. Mill plant and underground drilling areas as shown in the book because of safety reasons are off-limit to most people working at the mine too. It is great to able to see in photos. This book is very detailed in all phases of mineral exploration and yet very interesting to read. A must-have book if you are into the subject of geology/mining.

About the Author
Claudia Cornett is a Professor Emerita at Wittenberg University. During her twenty-four year tenure at Wittenberg, she taught graduate and undergraduate courses in all aspects of literacy, children’s literature, and arts integration. She also directed the Education Department’s Reading Center. In recognition of her work, the Wittenberg’s Alumni Association honored her with the Distinguished Teaching Award. Before moving to the college level, Claudia taught grades 1–8, served a reading specialist, and earned a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Miami University.

Claudia has written numerous books and articles about how and why the arts should be considered integral teaching and learning tools, and has publications in the fields of bibliotherapy, the strategic use of humor, and different components of literacy. In the latter category, her most recent book is entitled Comprehension First: Inquiry into Big Ideas and Important Questions (Holcomb Hathaway). In addition to writing, Claudia regularly does keynote speeches and conducts professional development for educators throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada. She has also been involved as a writer and worked on camera in various educational television productions including Sounds Abound (a series on early literacy), and Art Chat, which features interviews with artists in their studios. Additionally, she has done costumed interpretation in the role of Harriet Beecher Stowe and serves as a docent for two house museums: Glendower Mansion (Ohio) and the John Mark Verdier House (South Carolina).

Currently, Claudia’s professional work focuses on addressing literacy issues using an arts-infused teaching model. The Art Integration Book with No Art

I really hate this book. Considering this is a book about about art integration, it's shocking how there's absolutely no art integrated into the book at all. The author must not buy into the ideas she's preaching. The chapters are intimidating--just page after page of endless text. Most of it is repetitive in nature. She keeps rewording the same ideas over and over again. There's very little concrete information, almost nothing that's explicitly stated. I read entire chapters and wonder why I just read it. Most could be condensed down into just a few sentences.

Also, what's with the part about talking about "unborn children" demonstrating an innate desire to learn?

This book is big and has a ton of arts integration ideas, but the chapters are so long and single spaced with no breaks on the page. I bought it as a required text book and non of the students in my class like to read it because it almost kills you with too much information. Perhaps if we used it as a teacher for getting ideas to use in our class it wouldn't be so bad.
