Critical Race Theory Matters: Education and Ideology, by Margaret Zamudio, Christopher Russell, Francisco Rios, Jacquelyn L. Bridgeman

Over the past decade, Critical Race Theory (CRT) scholars in education have produced a significant body of work theorizing the impact of race and racism in education. Critical Race Theory Matters provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of this influential movement, shining its keen light on specific issues within education. Through clear and accessible language, the authors synthesize scholarship in the field, highlight major themes and assumptions, and examine strategies of resistance and practices for challenging the existing inequalities in education. By linking theory to everyday practices in today’s classroom, students will understand how CRT is relevant to a host of timely topics, from macro-policies such as Bilingual Education and Affirmative Action to micro-policies such as classroom management and curriculum. Moving beyond identifying problems into the realm of problem solving, Critical Race Theory Matters is a call to action to put into praxis a radical new vision of education in support of equality and social justice.

Review

"The strength of Critical Race Theory Matters is how the authors describe the salient summary points of Critical Race Theory with a clear and cohesive voice. Ideal for undergraduate courses on CRT or critical studies of race, Critical Race Theory Matters fulfills its purpose as an introductory text for students unfamiliar with CRT."

--Laurence Parker, Professor, Department of Educational Leadership & Policy, University of Utah

Critical Race Theory Matters
By Americatown Reviews
Critical Race Theory Matters is a well synchronized effort by four Professors at the University of Wyoming. This work is centralized around Critical Race Theory (CRT). CRT has evolved from years of multicultural studies and education around the country. The belief is that some form of structural change is required for true equality in America to take shape. This book is a manuscript for the issues still prevalent in a segregated and racist educational system.

The purpose of this book is to explain the structural difficulties that are in place inside American Education. These difficulties are essentially described as roadblocks towards equality. The authors draw on various educational experiences from around the United States and cite several progressive racial theorists throughout their work. It is obvious that this book cumulates difficult and progressive issues that have been missed by current standardized multicultural education curricula.

The book's true strength is in the readability of language chosen by the authors and editor. Void of overwhelming educational lingo, this book does not try to hide its meaning behind educational linguistic walls. This book is the edge of a battle cry to change the educational structures as we know them today. The authors are well spoken, and are the first to admit that the power is in the struggle towards equality.

Critiques of this work would point towards the lack of solutions to these ever apparent properties. The theme is towards social justice, but the book is weighted by social inequalities. Although the authors do a fantastic job of identifying problems, solutions are left to interpretation. They point towards involving students in working towards social justice as part of a CRT classroom, but few examples are given as to what this would look like in a classroom.

Practical and Understandable
By Apple-B-Flat
This text is easy to read, easy to understand, and thus, more useful. Other books on Critical Race Theory are more difficult to read. The print on this book is bigger, and the terminology understandable.
