Memoir of a patriarch of American China specialists

For anyone who cares to learn about the way of the Chinese, John King Fairbank's memoir offers double benefits. The obvious benefit is his understanding of how the Chinese think and act. It was clear why he became a pioneer of China Studies in America, given his Harvard position, elite global connections and his genuine love in what he did. The less obvious benefit is that this book is a window to his personality, thought process, and personal desires. Mid-way through this 480-page book, I couldn't resist underlying the many things he wrote. If you have taken any course in college on China, it is hard to believe that your professor is not a student, or student of a student (like me) whom Professor Fairbank had taught or somehow influenced. Fairbank was an academic entrepreneur. He saw an opportunity and he took it.

Timeless & Best of Class

If you can read only one book on China, make sure you select this by the justly renowned Prof. John King Fairbank.
You get auto-biography; a love letter to China; a scan of the study of Chinese history from the 1920's to 1970's -- and
all in a single volume, well written & a joy to read. Can't over-recommend it!
